If you've stumbled across this page looking for information about immortal rodents or tips on stockpiling I'm afraid you're going to be disappointed.
So what is The Sustainable Squirrel all about then?
Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin...
Hi! My name is Cheryl and this story actually starts a few years ago when I was living back at home with my parents. I started out just selling second hand clothes on eBay with my mum for some extra cash and that quickly evolved into buying vintage clothing to sell as we both loved rummaging through old clothes! We called our little business Menagical Vintage.
While we were doing this I was learning more and more about the fast fashion industry (and how bloody awful it is!🤬😡) and became determined that our business would operate as sustainably as possible.
This led to us creating upcycled and reworked clothing and accessories from some of the vintage items we couldn't sell (or just didn't like!). Nothing gets wasted, even the smallest scraps get made into jewellery.
Eventually my mum retired and I decided to change direction and focus more on the creative side of the business and develop a sustainable brand with an emphasis on building a community rather than just selling stuff. And so in the autumn of last year I rebranded as The Sustainable Squirrel.
I chose the name because I felt it captures what the business and I are all about. The Sustainable part, I hope, is obvious so why Squirrel?
Firstly, I like squirrels! I also like alliteration.
Secondly it helps to describe my habit of hoarding things (Because they might come in handy one day!) to be reused or turned into something fabulous. This mostly applies to buttons and packaging materials in the context of my business.
Lastly, and possibly most importantly, I have ADHD which is often described as like having a head full of squirrels (and they're all chasing a different nut!) This largely explains why I couldn't just stick to selling clothing or making things or just getting a 'proper job'. I like to be doing lots of different things, usually all at the same time, which I think is the reason The Sustainable Squirrel has evolved in the way it has. It enables me to wear many different hats, (quite literally, you should see my hat collection) and learn, use and teach many different skills.
So there you have it, not a single immortal rodent in sight. Just a slightly odd, 30 something woman with a button collection.
